Take Notes. Then Check.

When you listen to a sermon, write down what the preacher said, and the Bible verse he used. Then check it at home. The Bible tells us to do this. Today it takes only about two minutes.

Words on this page

The Spider is a church member who asks questions. A preacher once compared people who disagree with him to a spider. This website uses the name.

A creed is a short statement of what a church believes. It is written down, so everyone can read it.

The Nicene Creed is the oldest creed that almost all churches share. It was written in the years 325 and 381.

AI search means asking a computer tool, like Google, Claude or ChatGPT, a question in normal words.

Red flag means a warning sign: something that should make you careful.

This page is an opinion

This page gives the Spider’s opinion. It does not name any preacher, church or person.

The short answer

Seven points

1 · Take notes

Write down what the preacher said, and the Bible verse.

2 · Then check

The Bible praises people who checked what the apostle Paul taught.

3 · Red flag

A church with no creed has no written rules for what the pastor can teach.

4 · Big red flag

A church that will not say the Nicene Creed. Ask your pastor why.

5 · Red flag

A pastor who has no boss. Nobody can stop him. Be extra careful.

6 · Computers can be wrong

AI search helps. But always read the Bible verse yourself.

7 · It is your job

You cannot say to God, “My pastor told me.”

Part 1

Is taking notes rude?

No. Taking notes does not mean you do not trust your pastor. It means you are listening. A good pastor is happy when people read the Bible after his sermon.

Christians have taken notes for a long time. In the city of Geneva, from 1549, a man was paid to write down the sermons of the teacher John Calvin. In the 1600s, many Christians in England and America wrote down sermons and talked about them at home.

Part 2

The Bible says: check

Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Acts 17:11 · World English Bible

In simple words: The people of Berea listened to Paul gladly. Then they checked the Bible every day. God’s word calls them good for this.

Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.

1 Thessalonians 5:21 · World English Bible

In simple words: Check everything. Keep what is good.

Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

James 3:1 · World English Bible

In simple words: God judges teachers more strictly.

Some people say: “The Bible tells us to obey our leaders” (Hebrews 13:17). That is true. But the same Bible tells us to check (Acts 17:11). We do both.

Part 3

Three warning signs

1. No creed. In many old churches, a pastor makes a promise when he starts. He promises to teach what the church’s creed says. If he does not, his church leaders can stop him. A church with no creed has no such promise. Then anything the pastor says becomes the church’s teaching.

2. No Nicene Creed. Almost all churches have said the Nicene Creed for about 1,600 years. It says who God is and who Jesus is. If a church will not say it, that does not prove the church is wrong. But it is a big warning sign.

Ask yourself

Does my church say the Nicene Creed? If not, I will ask my pastor why.

3. No boss. In the Bible, every leader could be corrected. Paul corrected Peter in front of everyone (Galatians 2:11). If a pastor started the church, chooses the leaders, controls the money and has no boss, nobody can stop him. He may be a good man. But be extra careful.

Part 4

How to check in two minutes

  1. In church: write down what the preacher said, and the Bible verse.
  2. At home: open your Bible. Read the verses before and after, not only one verse.
  3. Ask an AI search tool: “What does this verse mean? Does it say what the preacher said?”
  4. Also ask: “What is the best reason to agree with the preacher?”
  5. Ask for sources. Check that they are real.
  6. If something is wrong, talk to your pastor kindly, and alone first.
A question you can copy

“A preacher said: ‘[what he said]’. He used [the verse]. Read the verse with the verses around it. Does it say this? Give reasons for and against, with sources.”

Be careful with computers

AI search can make mistakes. It can even invent quotes. It often agrees with the way you ask. So always read the Bible verse yourself. And check this website too.

Part 5

It is your job

Wrong teaching can be preached with a loud and sure voice. If nobody checks, nobody notices.

Remember this

One day you will stand before God. You cannot say, “My pastor told me.”

Do you want to be led the wrong way? Then check. It takes two minutes. Please try it this week.
