What do some preachers say?
“If people leave the faith, they were never really saved.”
“You were baptized as a baby, but you did not believe. So it did not count. Be baptized again.”
In simple words: a person can feel sure and be wrong. And baptism only counts if your faith was real.If your faith made your baptism count, then your doubt can make it not count.
Ask Google, Claude or ChatGPT: “If someone who was baptized as a believer falls away, should they be baptized again?”
Where does it stop?
Here is a made-up story. A boy is baptized at 14. Later he lives badly for many years. He hears the preacher say, “People who leave were never really saved.” He thinks, “That is me.” He is sorry. He is baptized again at 28.
Years later he falls again. He doubts again. Now he asks for a third baptism.
What can the pastor say? He cannot say, “Your faith at 28 was real.” Nobody can see inside a heart.
“The heart is more tricky than anything. Who can understand it?”
Jeremiah 17:9, in modern English. In simple words: we cannot fully know our own hearts. What did the early Church do?
About the year 250, the government hurt Christians. Many Christians said they did not follow Jesus. Later they were sorry. They wanted to come back.
The Church let them come back. They said sorry to God, and the Church forgave them. Nobody baptized them again.
Peter said three times that he did not know Jesus. Jesus did not baptize him again. Jesus asked him three questions, and forgave him.
John 21:15–17.Where should you look?
Most churches that baptize a person a second time will not do it a third time. They say, “Stop looking inside yourself. Trust God’s promise.” That is good advice. But it is also true at the first baptism.
If you have to stop somewhere, why not stop at the first baptism?
If you doubt, do not look inside yourself. Look at what God has promised.
“If we tell God our sins, he is faithful and fair. He will forgive us.”
1 John 1:9, in modern English. This page does not blame anyone who was baptized again. Most people did what their pastor told them, and they meant it.
How many baptisms does it take to be sure?
